The Aga Khan Health Service, Pakistan (AKHS, P) is seeking an experienced Pharmacist, reporting to the Senior Pharmacist.

Summary of the Role

The Pharmacist reviews prescriptions, ensures safe and accurate dispensing of medications, provides patient counselling and drug information, manages pharmacy inventory, supports clinical teams and contributes to staff development to deliver high-quality pharmacy services in compliance with regulatory and hospital guidelines.

Key Responsibilities

  • Reviews and validates prescriptions for accuracy, safety and appropriateness.
  • Dispenses medicines in accordance with medical orders, hospital policies and regulatory requirements.
  • Prevents and resolves medication-related errors.
  • Provides medication counselling to patients regarding correct usage, side effects and interactions.
  • Monitors patient responses to drug therapy and makes recommendations.
  • Participates in ward rounds and multidisciplinary clinical teams.
  • Maintains adequate stock levels of medicines, vaccines and medical surgical supplies.
  • Ensures the proper storage conditions for all pharmaceutical items.
  • Manages the control of narcotics or controlled substances as per regulations.
  • Monitors, documents and reports adverse drug reactions (ADRs).
  • Ensures compliance with hospital and national pharmacovigilance guidelines.
  • Provides training and guidance to pharmacy technicians, assistants and nurses as required.
  • Ensures compliance with hospital policies, Drug Regulatory Authority guidelines and legal requirements.
  • Maintains accurate records of dispensing, controlled substances and adverse events.
  • Contributes to the development of hospital formularies and treatment guidelines.
  • Takes inventory of prescription and over-the-counter medications and other pharmaceutical products and records results and checks of expiry dates on medicines.
  • Evaluates the level of patient satisfaction and takes appropriate measures in case of discontent.
  • Demonstrates the ability to perform extemporaneous and sterile admixtures.
  • Prepares and submits regular pharmaceutical orders based on the consumption and needs of the health facility.
  • Provides health education to patients on the rational use of medicines, proper dosage, adherence and safe storage of medicines at home.
  • Serves as a technical member of the Drug and Therapeutics Committee and provides pharmaceutical expertise.
  • Prepares, compiles and submits health facility pharmaceutical consumption reports accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Monitors, manages and takes appropriate action for near-expiry medicines to minimize wastage and ensure the continuous availability of quality medicines.
  • Performs any other tasks as assigned by the Line Manager.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Pharm-D degree from a recognized institution.
  • 6 months’ experience, preferably within healthcare systems or large service organizations.
  • Maintain licensure in good standing as a Registered Pharmacist with the Pharmacy Council.
  • Certificate of Full Registration with the Pharmacy relevant Pharmacy Council.
  • Team Player, Interpersonal Skills and Customer-Service Orientation.
  • Ability to work accurately following standard operational procedures.
  • Strong Verbal Communicator, Excellent Active Listening Skills.
  • Keyboard skills, basic data entry and retrieval.
  • Ensures compliance with policies and procedures regarding department operations, fire, safety and infection control.
  • Ability to handle difficult situations involving patients, physicians, or others in a professional manner.
  • Ability to give oral instructions/information to patients and visitors.
  • Results-driven, ethical and adaptable professional with a strong service and stakeholder focus.
  • Strong integrity with the sensitivity to manage confidential information.
  • Demonstrates superior organizational skills and the agility to multitask and assume changing strategic responsibilities in a dynamic environment.
