Position summary
The Basic Literacy Teacher will conduct basic literacy classes for women prisoners at Hyderabad Women Prison as part of the Women Prisoners’ Education Program. The role focuses on delivering interactive and inclusive literacy sessions (Urdu reading, writing, and numeracy), using non-formal education methods, and creating a respectful, trauma-sensitive learning environment that supports rehabilitation and reintegration.
Key responsibilities
- Plan and deliver daily literacy classes covering basic Urdu reading, writing, and functional numeracy.
- Use non-formal education (NFE) techniques suitable for adult learners.
- Develop or adapt learning materials such as worksheets, flashcards, and visual aids.
- Conduct monthly learner assessments and submit progress reports.
- Coordinate with prison authorities and program team for class scheduling and security protocols.
- Maintain a safe, respectful, and inclusive classroom environment.
- Motivate and support learners with limited educational background.
- Coordinate with M&E staff to provide feedback, success stories, and case studies.
- Deliver structured basic Islamic lessons to support ethical and personal development of learners.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Education, Social Sciences, or related field.
- Minimum 2 years of experience in adult literacy, community education, or non-formal education.
- Experience working with marginalized communities or correctional facilities is preferred.
- Familiarity with non-formal education or adult learning frameworks.
- Fluency in Urdu and Sindhi (reading, writing, speaking); basic English preferred.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality, professionalism, and empathetic communication.

- Ensure measurable improvement in learners’ basic literacy and numeracy skills.
- Maintain attendance, assessment records, and progress reports.
- Create a respectful and trauma-sensitive learning environment.
- Coordinate effectively with prison administration and program staff.
- Comply with prison security protocols and organizational policies.
