Junior Rangeland Management Expert

Background

The Revival of Balochistan Water Resources Programme (RBWRP) aims to support the transition of agriculture and livestock farming systems in Balochistan (Pakistan) towards lower water intensity, while improving environmental sustainability and economic resilience.

The programme pursues the following key objectives:

  1. Strengthen governance of water resources and rangelands;

  2. Develop alternative agricultural and livestock farming systems based on a low-water agro-economy;

  3. Promote water-efficient and profitable agricultural value chains;

  4. Increase the availability of qualified agro-technology cadres capable of delivering on-farm technical support and climate-relevant advisory services to farmers.

Under RBWRP, rangeland management is a core component. Key activities include rangeland capacity assessments, formulation and finalisation of the Rangeland Management Policy, and rangeland surveys and mapping across four river basins and 32 sub-basins. Field data collection was carried out jointly by the Technical Assistance (TA) team and FAO as the implementing partner, under the supervision of the FAO Rangeland Specialist. The collected data have been analysed and consolidated into technical reports.

The TA has initiated participatory rangeland management pilots, while FAO, in line with its approved work plan, is responsible for developing Participatory Rangeland Management Plans (PRMPs)—one for each basin. These pilots and planning processes require continuous technical oversight, mentoring, and coordination. For this purpose, the RBWRP-TA seeks the services of a Junior Rangeland Management Expert.

Scope of Work and Responsibilities

Under the overall guidance of the RBWRP-TA Team Leader and in close coordination with FAO, the Junior Rangeland Management Expert will be responsible for the following tasks:

  1. Support ongoing participatory rangeland management pilot(s) implemented by the TA and contribute to the finalisation of a long-term sustainability plan and exit strategy for these pilots;

  2. Finalise Participatory Rangeland Management Plans (PRMPs)—one for each basin—and provide coaching and technical support during their initial implementation;

  3. Design grazing systems and other rangeland rehabilitation and improvement measures aimed at restoring degraded rangelands;

  4. Provide continuous technical oversight, guidance, and coordination support to both TA and FAO rangeland-related pilots and activities;

  5. Support relevant government officials and local communities in the adoption of sustainable rangeland management practices;

  6. Prepare and submit technical reports, schematic plans, and maps related to rangeland management interventions and pilot activities.

The assignment will be for a period of five (5) months, comprising an initial 44 working days, starting from mid-February 2026.
